Steven Fletcher, the new striker for Wrexham, may have made a boatload of money during his time in the Premier League, but you can bet he won’t show up to practice in a flashy Lamborghini.
Steven Fletcher, a recent addition to Wrexham, allegedly gave up a $260,000 supercar to avoid being called a haughty hotshot.
The 36-year-old former Scotland international joined the newly promoted League Two team this week on a free transfer after being let go by Dundee United at the end of the last campaign.
Since he spent the majority of his career playing in the top division of football, Fletcher has plenty of money to spare and once amassed a sizable automobile collection.
He gained notoriety when a picture of him smiling next to a $250,000 Lamborghini Aventador with a posh Bentley Continental in the background went viral in 2015. The image incensed Sunderland supporters who claimed he was more focused on his financial situation than the club’s struggle to avoid relegation.
In reaction, Fletcher sold the Lamborghini and bought a modest 4X4 in its place. He said the auto salesman had “stitched him up” by asking him to take a picture in front of his new vehicle before subsequently disclosing the image, but he believed that getting rid of the vehicle was worthwhile because of the online backlash.
“While we all make errors, I don’t regret purchasing my automobile. I received dog’s abuse from the supporters for that, of course they did,” he admitted in 2016. “If I had shared the photo of myself next to this car, it would have been terrible, but I didn’t. I received criticism for posing for a photo while standing next to my automobile.
“The individual from whom I purchased it requested a photo of myself. I gave my consent, and two weeks later it was in the hands of someone else who tweeted it.
“People mistook me for Billy Big Time,” They misunderstood me after seeing the Lamborghini. I had a reputation for flaunting things when I was younger, although I came from a typical home.
Fortunately for Fletcher, Sunderland only narrowly avoided the drop that season. A half-year later, he was loaned to the Ligue 1 team Marseille before leaving the Stadium of Light permanently and joining Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the season.
He transferred to Stoke in 2020 and subsequently to Dundee United in 2022 after spending four years at Hillsborough. He had previously had successful runs with Hibbs, Burnley, and Wolves.
