Illan Meslier, the goalkeeper, said to the Official Leeds United podcast that he “wasn’t good enough” last season, but now that he’s stayed with the team all summer, he expects to make amends.
Meslier, 23, was not at all the goalie who was initially regarded as one of Europe’s finest young shot-stoppers. Meslier did, in fact, allow 73 goals in 38 games for Leeds previous season. 5 fresh sheets.
Meslier was replaced by Joel Robles after Sam Allardyce joined the team for the remaining four league games. The Spaniard joined Robbie Fowler’s backup Saudi team after leaving Leeds.
Although Karl Darlow from Newcastle has joined, Meslier is still the preferred candidate. The French goalie, who is still the first choice, acknowledges that his performance last season was
“Last season was challenging, particularly the second half. To be honest, I wasn’t at my best, and it’s vital that I recognize that. I can’t tell myself that it was the team because I want to be the best.
Meslier acknowledges he was inadequate for Leeds during the previous season.
Meslier, who cost £5 million to purchase, is still a top goalkeeper and ranks among the best in the Championship at age 23. He is a goalkeeper of Premier League caliber, and he has more potential than most.
Meslier should be able to put last season behind him and regain the form that earned him a price tag of more than £20 million and links to some of the top teams in Europe. If so, Leeds stand a good chance of being promoted.
