Farke is anxious to control the expectations, demands, and narrative surrounding a 17-year-old youngster whose transition into the first team has gone as smoothly as it had been anticipated.
Gray, who was 15 at the time, was first invited to join a Premier League traveling party in January 2022 by Marcelo Bielsa. Even though the team sheet that was later published did not include the teen’s name, his presence when the Whites disembarked from the coach at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was always going to raise eyebrows.
Due to the squad’s circumstances at the time, Bielsa expressed regret for having to force Gray into that situation too soon, but he had a lot to say about the young player’s potential.
“He has the resources to attain [elite status], he will achieve it,” the Argentinean stated.

However, Farke has been the manager to make Gray’s entrance into the first squad possible. Gray is the grandson and great nephew of club heroes Frank and Eddie. Gray has played 448 of Leeds’ 450 Championship minutes to thus time, and his nearly constant presence helped Leeds decide to keep him at Thorp Arch during the break rather than allow him to accept an England youth call-up.
“First of all, he is blessed with unbelievable physicality, I have to say, so unbelievable endurance, because otherwise it wouldn’t be possible for a 17-year-old guy on this level to play so many minutes – he has outstanding data,” stated Farke.

In the last days of the transfer window, Farke boosted his midfield options just before the break by adding the more seasoned Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara. Gray’s workload should be lighter when they arrive, though Farke isn’t overly concerned about it.
Just have to make sure that the 17-year-old isn’t carrying an undue burden in terms of soft skills, such as from the mental side, from pressure, the manager said.

In light of the overwhelming praise and hype surrounding Archie, Farke said, “I think it’s beneficial when his manager is a bit more calm, doesn’t praise him too much, and speaks also about the errors in his game, where he can and must improve, and what he has to learn.”
“I think it’s good because it would be simple for me to sing his praises as well, but if everyone sings his praises, I think I protect that he’s still grounded,” the speaker said.
