Callum Wilson will be hopeful that his season’s worth of goal-scoring exploits will be enough to get him a spot in the Champions League game against AC Milan tomorrow night.

Callum Wilson’s expertly executed penalty, which came after he had a goal strangely disallowed for a foul that never occurred, separated Newcastle from Brentford on Saturday night.

Wilson scored on his first start of the campaign, giving him his third goal of the year.

With a crucial match at the San Siro in Milan tomorrow night, Wilson, a £20 million transfer from Bournemouth, will be hoping he’s done enough to earn his spot in the starting lineup.

However, after writing on X that Wilson trained separately from the main group this morning before leaving for Italy, Keith Downie believes there may be a small reason for concern for the 31-year-old.

The following is from Downie’s post: “Callum Wilson trained separately from the main group this morning, doing some light running, before #NUFC travel over here to Milan this afternoon to face @acmilan tomorrow night.”

Wilson is seen to act pretty normally despite how unsettling that would be to read if it were any other player.

Wilson is prepared to join Newcastle when needed.

Eddie Howe likes to make sure Wilson is taken care of given his history of injuries. Howe was worried that he wasn’t adhering to the plan Newcastle had laid out for him while he was away with England at the World Cup.

Light duties after a game on Saturday are therefore not unusual, especially with another game coming up so soon.

Alexander Isak is expected to return to the starting lineup for the match against Milan, although Wilson will still be eager to contribute from the bench.
