With many clouds in the sky, Nottingham Forest entered the new Premier League season.

Throughout the preseason, the Reds put on numerous worrisome displays in friendlies, including a humiliating 5-0 loss to Rennes, which gave the impression that they lacked both confidence and fitness.

As the club appeared to be adopting a different strategy than previous summer with only three signings completed heading into the new season, Steve Cooper’s squad likewise appeared thin. There were real worries that Forest would lose to Arsenal in their opening game and that things would get out of hand.

In a little more than a month, Forest will have the opportunity to move eight points above the bottom three, and they will genuinely believe they can finish in the top half.

Even though the season has only had five games, the Reds have a formidable team that can compete with any team in the division. This summer, the club paid heavily on players like Anthony Elanga and Ibrahim Sangare, both of whom joined Forest from Champions League teams.

Forest also seem to have overcome their issues when playing away from home. The Reds’ lone league road win in 2022–23 came at hapless Southampton by a score of 1-0.

With their first victory at Chelsea since January 1995, Cooper’s club had now matched that total this year. Although Forest will always be a better club at the City Ground, their ability to compete away from Trentside should allow them to finish comfortably in the middle of the league.
