Latics defeated newly promoted Oxford City 4-0 to earn their second straight victory under temporary manager Steve Thompson.
With a 2-0 win over York in the middle of the week, Thompson, who replaced the fired David Unsworth last weekend, helped Latics get their first victory in eight games and move themselves out of the National League relegation zone.
Brennan Dickenson scored two goals yesterday, and Devarn Green and James Norwood also scored for Latics, one of the teams predicted to contend for promotion this year.
Taking advantage of a nice through ball from Dan Gardner, Green scored the game’s first goal in the fifteenth minute. Dickenson doubled the lead in the twenty-second minute with an unstoppable long-range drive.
Oxford, who had not won in seven games after dropping their first three, had no response, and in the final seconds of the second half, veteran strikers Norwood and Dickenson put gloss to the victory.
when Oxford goalkeeper Chris Haigh again displayed heroism, Norwood scored right away when Dickenson produced another outstanding effort to strike the top corner from a free-kick.
Thomspon, who was overjoyed, remarked, “We set ourselves high standards and we’ve got a good team ethic.”
On Tuesday night, Latics will play again when they visit Kidderminster Harriers.
Nathan Sheron, a midfielder for Latics, has extended his contract at Boundary Park by one year, keeping him there until 2025.
Sheron joined the team in the summer of 2022 from Harrogate Town, and he has since appeared in every minute of 54 of Latics’ 56 league contests.
Full-back Benny Couto has been assigned to Ashton United on a temporary basis.
