Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien has suffered a potentially serious injury while on loan at Middlesbrough.
O’Brien took a knock to his ankle on Saturday afternoon during a 3-2 win away at Watford, and he was substituted after just 36 minutes. Speaking after the match, Boro boss Michael Carrick admitted he is “fearing the worst” for the 24-year-old.
Carrick warned it “doesn’t look good” for O’Brien, though the midfielder will have to undergo a scan before discovering the full extent of his injury. If it is serious, O’Brien could end up returning to Forest for treatment.
“It doesn’t look good, to be honest,” Carrick said post-match on Saturday. “We’re fearing the worst with Lewis. We’ll have to wait for scans, but it could leave him out for a bit of time that.
“It was a whack on his ankle/bottom of his shin bone. Fingers crossed it doesn’t end up being as bad as feared, but at the minute it doesn’t look too good.”
O’Brien has made six appearances on loan for Middlesbrough so far this season, with five of those coming in the Championship. He is yet to score or assist from midfield.
