After Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 victory over the weekend, Destiny Udogie received racial abuse on social media, which Liverpool has condemned.
Udogie was a member of the Tottenham team that defeated Liverpool on Saturday night in a contentious and dramatic game, with Spurs winning 2-1 on Joel Matip’s own goal in the 96th minute.
The youthful full-back shared happy pictures to Instagram after his team’s decisive victory, but the comments section underneath the post was inundated with racial slurs.
Liverpool has already issued a statement denouncing the shocking abuse the Tottenham player endured and announcing they would cooperate with law enforcement to find those responsible.
The statement reads: “Liverpool FC condemns all manifestations of racism and discrimination and will cooperate with the appropriate authorities and social media platforms to assist in the identification of those responsible and apply the strongest sanctions.”
Tottenham earlier on Monday said in a statement that they will assist in finding the offenders: “We are appalled by the racial remarks made against Destiny Udogie on social media after the match against Liverpool on Saturday.
We will collaborate with the Premier League and, when appropriate, take legal action against anyone we can name.
“We are here for you, Destiny.”
The Liverpool statement is just one of many that the team has released following a highly contentious match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Reds claimed on Sunday that the shocking VAR system oversight that resulted in Luis Diaz’s first-half goal being disallowed for offside—a goal that would’ve given Liverpool a 1-0 lead—had “undermined sporting integrity.”
In addition, Liverpool has decided to dispute the red card given to Curtis Jones for a heavy and nearly leg-breaking attack on star midfielder Yves Bissouma of Tottenham, one of two the Reds got on the day.
