Portsmouth will earn promotion from League One this year, according to Carlton Palmer.
With 25 points from their first 11 league games, Pompey has had a fantastic start to the season and is presently in first place.
With a 2-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Fratton Park on Tuesday night, John Mousinho’s team extended their undefeated streak to an astounding 22 games. Colby Bishop’s equalizer and Conor Shaughnessy’s game-winning goal in the 98th minute turned the game around after Josh Scowen had given the Chairboys the lead.
Portsmouth is the only team in the third division that has not yet suffered a loss this season, and they are five points ahead of Bolton Wanderers in third.
Mousinho was thrilled with his team’s most recent victory and lauded his players for their perseverance in rallying from a deficit.
“It feels amazing after seeing the whole stadium erupt like that, and I’m really pleased for the fans and the lads,” Mousinho said, according to the club’s official website.
“I won’t lie, I really liked that one. I would have been happy with the performance regardless of the late goal since it was a difficult game and we played well.
“Wycombe are a team that is good at what they do, and we handled the physical exam well. When you fall behind them, it’s challenging.
They sat in and made it difficult for us to do that, but we persisted in trying to get the ball down and out wide.
“We persisted, and some of the young players who played for over 90 minutes were just outstanding.
“We don’t want to have to come from behind all the time, but now when it does, there is calmness on the field and in the stands.
We know we’ll have opportunities to get back in the game, and if it doesn’t, it won’t be for a want of trying, so that’s why.
What was said by Carlton Palmer?
Palmer, who spoke exclusively to Football League World, praised Portsmouth for their strong start to the season and predicted that they would be promoted if they could keep up their current level of play and add players in January.
Portsmouth was anticipated at the beginning of the season, and so far, Palmer added, they are living up to those hopes.
“Seven victories, four ties, and 0 losses is a strong start to the season.
“Portsmouth are quite likely to get promoted this year.
“I think there will be a lot of jubilant Pompey fans come May,” said the author. “If they can maintain this fine run of form and add to the squad in January.”
Will Portsmouth succeed in getting out of League One this year?
Palmer’s prediction that Portsmouth will be supported during this campaign is impossible to argue with.
Since taking over at Fratton Park in January, Mousinho has performed admirably, solidifying his position as one of the most talented young managers in the EFL.
With players like Colby Bishop and Kusini Yengi up front, Pompey had a successful business summer. They undoubtedly pose a serious threat.
Bolton, Oxford United, Derby County, Barnsley, Peterborough United, and Blackpool are just a few of the teams who will compete with Portsmouth for first place in the standings this year, but Mousinho’s team currently appears to be the front-runner for promotion.
