The regular season for the New York Giants in 2023 is quickly nearing an all-too-familiar—and undesirable—place. With no feeling of urgency or firepower, New York is currently 1-4 on the year and battling to win games. They visit the Miami Dolphins this week, where they are a significant underdog, and they will undoubtedly face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football the following week, where they will also be a significant underdog.
By the time they come home on October 22 to face the Washington Commanders before playing the New York Jets at home to complete the month, head coach Brian Daboll’s club may have a 1-6 record, barring a miracle. And if things don’t change quickly, the Giants season might effectively be finished by Halloween.
The offensive line, Daniel Jones, the lack of turnovers, poor starts, etc. have all contributed to the Giants’ troubles, which have been well-documented. Daboll is well aware of the issues, but when questioned about them, his only response is that everyone on the team needs to improve and that the coaches need to coach more effectively. When he’s been blitzed, Tua has completed 30 of 44 passes (68.2%) for 347 yards and four touchdowns. DUE TO MIAMI, THE GIANTS WILL LOSE The Miami offense is every bit as effective, dynamic (they lead the league with 25 plays of 20+ yards), and reliable as the Giants had hoped for their offensive this year.
The Dolphins still lead the league in average points scored per game (37.5), which equates to 3.19 points per scoring drive (compared to the Giants’ 1.05 points per scoring drive). This is true even after last week’s defeat to the Bills, a 48-20 contest. As we are all aware, the Giants’ issues have been well covered. Injury-ravaged offensive line has been a heated mess. Daniel Jones, the quarterback, has degenerated to the point that he still feels the need to leave the field even when he has a clear pocket in which to work.
The Giants defense simply isn’t producing enough impact plays to have an impact on the game, and they can’t seem to purchase a turnover to save their lives. The Giants’ early-season difficulties have resulted in a league-worst -76 point differential in the first half of games, which, by the way, has resulted in the team failing to score a touchdown in the opening 30 minutes of play this season. Even the coaching staff, which managed to do so much with so little last year, is unable to put out the fire that is threatening to completely consume this 2023 season.
