Peter Schmeichel slammed Yves Bissouma for diving during Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Luton Town.

Already on a yellow card, Tottenham’s in-form midfielder was shown a second yellow card by on-field referee John Brooks for going to the ground without any contact while running at Luton’s penalty area.

It was a blatant dive from Yves Bissouma and he was rightfully punished, with Peter Schmeichel stating that it was ‘so silly’ from the player, as he told Premier League Productions (07/10/23 at 2:45 pm).

At the time, the scores were goalless, with Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou bringing on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for Richarlison at the half-time break to bulk up his midfield.

It worked a treat because Micky van de Ven would score his first goal for Spurs and it proved to be the winning goal against newly-promoted Luton – it now means Spurs are sitting top ahead of Man City’s clash against Arsenal.

Yves Bissouma would have been counting his lucky stars, but it still means that he is now suspended.

“I don’t even know what he is doing,” said Schmeichel. “Just let him go. He is going nowhere. Bissouma must know, with the experience he has, that he will be booked.

“He now knows he is booked and this is right at the death of the first half, this is a fantastic spot by the referee, by the way. We didn’t see it. We thought it was a foul.

“Why did he do that? That is so silly. Of course, he is letting his team down. I have to say he had played really well.”

Compared to last season, the £55k-a-week star (Spotrac) looks like the player Spurs fans were hoping he would be 12 months ago.

A lot has to do with the system he is playing in. More fluid. More numbers in midfield. The freedom to push forward and someone like James Maddison ahead of him.

The England international is making Spurs click like never before and it’s a big reason why they are sitting top of the tree and unbeaten.
