The forward was not of interest to the Black Cats throughout the summer, but there might be more interest in January.
As more Premier League clubs show interest in the Black Cats forward, Sunderland may be “forced with a big offer” for Jack Clarke in the January transfer window. The 22-year-old was targeted by Burnley in the summer, and now Brentford is reportedly interested in signing the former Tottenham starlet.
The winger scored seven goals in his first 12 appearances as Tony Mowbray’s team mounted another Championship promotion drive after the Wearsiders rejected any interest in Clarke in recent months. Since Clarke has three years left on his current contract, Sunderland is not forced to sell or run the danger of losing him on a subpar deal.
Carlton Palmer, a former midfielder for Leeds United and England, believes that if a sufficient offer is made, the Black Cats may not have much of a choice. According to reports, Brentford is seeking to transact business for about £15 million, which is significantly more than the £10 million offer Burnley made to Sunderland in the summer.
Should Ivan Toney, a striker, leave Brentford during the January transfer window, the team might have money to invest. The forward has continued to get plenty of interest from teams like Arsenal despite his current suspension for gambling-related actions, and that might have a trickle-down impact.
In order to acquire Jack Clarke from Sunderland, Brentford is reportedly considering a £15 million offer, according to Palmer of Football League World. Burnley made three attempts to sign Clarke but were unsuccessful.
“Clarke, who is 22 years old, got off to a great start to the season, scoring seven goals in 11 Championship games. Given that the club is vying for promotion, Mowbray won’t want Clarke to leave. However, a sizable offer might compel him to give in.
“Brentford, I think, are expecting Ivan Toney to leave in the January transfer window so are already looking at possible replacements.”
