Micky Mellon, the former manager of Tranmere Rovers, has been named the new manager of Oldham Athletic on a three-year contract.
51-year-old Mellon spent two stints with Rovers, the most recent of which ended in March of this year.
With Fleetwood Town and Tranmere, the Scot has twice been promoted from the National League.
“This is a hugely exciting opportunity at a wonderful club and I am determined to deliver the success that everyone here craves,” he stated on the club’s website.
It is a great honour to be joining Oldham Athletic at this time given the club’s goals and recent developments. There is so much potential and room to create something truly exceptional.
“The supporters of this club deserve success and together I want us to embark on a journey that will create lasting memories for us all.”
David Unsworth, a former Everton defender who was fired last month following a shaky start to the season, is replaced at Boundary Park by Mellon.
As caretakers, Steven Thompson and Neil Redfearn guided the squad to three victories and three draws, moving them up to 12th in the standings.
On Thursday, they both quit the team. Paul Murray, the academy manager, will take charge of Saturday’s FA Cup playoff game at Altrincham.
Mellon will take command of the Latics for the first time during the trip. He has also served as manager of Shrewsbury and Dundee United.
