Jack Clarke has paid tribute to his Sunderland team-mates after the Black Cats star picked up the Championship player of the month award for September. Clarke has started this season in fine form, scoring six goals in five games during the month to earn the award.
However, the former Tottenham youngster was quick to highlight the contribution of his team-mates, with Sunderland winning four of their five games in the month, including big victories over promotion rivals Southampton and Blackburn Rovers. Clarke, 22, notched in three consecutve wins, but says his award shows how well the team is performing.
“It feels good,” he said. “Obviously I’m happy to win it but for me it’s more a reflection on how well the team did in September, rather than just me. I was just on the end of a lot of moves. We had a good month and we’ll use that to kick on into the next couple.

“I enjoyed Blackburn away – I feel like we didn’t play our best stuff that night but still came away with the win against a good team. It might be the turning point in the month and we used it as momentum to kick on, and we’ll keep using it.”
Clarke has seven goals for the campaign already, which is just four less than his total of 11 for the whole of last season. And he explained why he thinks he is so prolific in front of goal this term.
“I’m not sure really – the freedom the manager gives me and the understanding we’ve got as a group, where the people are going to be at the right time, and taking my chances,” he added.
“We brought in a lot of good players and we’re still trying to introduce them into how we play. They will only help us, and that’s what we’re hoping they will do.
