In recent weeks, Tomas Soucek (£4.9m) has really captured my attention. He enjoyed scoring goals while playing in an attacking midfield position for West Ham during his first season there, and more recently, we’ve seen David Moyes employ him farther forward where he presents a strong goal threat. Alphonse Areola (£4.2m), the best goalkeeper on a tight budget, is also on my radar along with Jarrod Bowen (£7.3m), Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m), and others.

With Areola in goal and Bowen in midfield, I used two Wildcards against West Ham. I’m still happy I invested even though neither player came back in Gameweek 8. The West Ham matches starting in Gameweek 10 look fantastic, and given how inexpensive Soucek is, I might think about switching up my lineup and investing in him. Additionally, it would allow me to upgrade Dan Burn (£4.6 million) to Kieran Trippier (£6.9 million).

In GW8, Bowen was selected as a long-term player. Although James Ward-Prowse and he are closely matched, Bowen is worth the extra cost. Emerson ($4.5 million) has performed well but has received four cautions. This season, West Ham has the third-worst statistics for Expected Goals Against, so

I don’t want to double up on their defense because Areola is so inexpensive and I’m hesitant to replace him with a defender. In terms of attacking, Bowen is the only returner I consider to be the safest. The price difference between West Ham’s other attackers is too tiny to matter at less than £7.5 million.

The two standouts are Areola and Bowen. But Coufal or another center-back are also very valuable, especially after GW10. Ward-Prowse (£6.3m) is an intriguing, less expensive replacement for Bowen in midfield.
