In the early weeks of the season, Alex Mowatt, a midfielder for Albion, acknowledged that he was uncertain about his position in Carlos Corberan’s plans.

Mowatt has demonstrated his significance to the Baggies this season during the past month, seizing his chance to start the team with a string of strong performances.

The central midfielder attracted Corberan and the fans’ attention during preseason throughout the summer as the Spanish head coach looked over returning and new Albion potential. He was loaned out to Middlesbrough by former manager Steve Bruce. However, Mowatt, 28, acknowledged that he had wondered if Baggies manager had him in his plans for this season. It can be challenging when the manager doesn’t talk to you as frequently and you wonder if he likes you or not, according to Mowatt.

He’s incredibly helpful in that regard, but I wanted to give preseason my all. Listen to everyone, watch footage where you need to improve. I made an effort to please and follow instructions.

“I’ve played a few games in a row, and just from match fitness compared to any other kind, you feel much fitter,”

Corberan recently compared Mowatt’s wait for a starting opportunity to an apple that is ripening.

He emphasized the importance of not acting too soon or too late and stated it was a matter of time to determine whether the player was ready to be selected. At home against Millwall, the former Barnsley and Leeds midfielder was eventually given his first Championship start of the year. The game ended in a draw, but Mowatt and Grady Diangana, who was also back in the mix following injury, stood out. “It’s quite difficult to come off the bench in midfield and make a huge impact; you’ve got to get used to how the game is, it’s difficult,” said Doncaster-born Mowatt.

“I hadn’t started in a while, so I was unsure if I would start, but he then gave me a chance to play in that game, and I did well. Ever then, I’ve been included, so far, so good. “I believe that (there is pressure to perform),” I said before the game. “I was thinking, ‘This is my chance,’ and I wanted to have a strong game because it was a big game for me.

The 4-0 victory over Preston featured Mowatt’s first goal for Albion since April 2022. He has been added to the lineup to play with Okay Yokuslu in place of Jayson Molumby.
