Micky Mellon, the new manager of the Latics, is obviously eager about taking on his newest significant managerial task. Mellon, who was born in Paisley and is now 51, was named the Latics’ new manager on Friday, which was a major victory for the Boundary Park team. Mellon is a seasoned manager with a number of prior promotions to his resume, most notably two in back-to-back seasons during his initial tenure as Tranmere’s manager. But with Latics having dropped into non-league for the first time from the Premier League 18 months ago, the focus now is on getting them back into the EFL. Mellon’s choice to move to Boundary Park seems to have been heavily influenced by the new Latics administration under the Rothwell family and the obvious expectations for the future.

On Monday, Mellon remarked, “Oldham is a club that is attempting to move forward.

You only need to look around to see that everything is being done to make the club and its surroundings better.”As a result, it’s a wonderful destination for me to visit, and the job is interesting. “I believe that Oldham and I connected at the appropriate time. “I’ve had seven months off, which has allowed me to travel, learn, and even see what everyone else is up to. “Since I quit playing football when I was 16, it was beneficial for me to take some time off and consider what I would do if the perfect chance presented itself. “It’s a blessing that I was able to wait,”

“Everyone in football is aware of the current situation at Oldham, so when I spoke with them, my suspicions were verified. “That’s why I’m looking so much towards the future now.” Mellon, a former manager of Tranmere, Dundee United, Shrewsbury, Barnsley, and Fleetwood, is eager to continue the rebuilding process. His first game in charge of Latics will be the juicy local derby at Rochdale on Saturday. “Of course there will be expectations now, and we know where we want to try and get to, but we have to understand that it will take time,” the Scotsman continued. “Those are just the facts; I’m not trying to buy time or anything like that.

“The reality is that after a difficult period, we are reconstructing something.

It’s up to me to try and continue it on now and keep the momentum going ahead. David Unsworth started that turnaround, and Steve Thompson was here at the time. “We know exactly where we want to go, but in jobs like these, it’s critical that we focus on the here and now because it’s easy to get caught up in trying to get there too quickly.

“Right now, the focus is on fielding a team that will play to the expectations of the Oldham supporters and winning games right away. “That will then build up the momentum, and we’ll start winning games.”
