Eddie Hearn has hinted that Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney could potentially be open to getting involved in his very own boxing match.
The new Blues manager is already known to be a keen combat sports fan, having been pictured across the years at multiple different events in and around the UK. Rooney was also famously videoed being knocked out by Phil Bardsley in a jovial kitchen bust-up.
Having returned to England from a stint in charge of DC United in MLS, it seems the former Manchester United forward is keen on looking at other avenues he could potentially explore. With plenty of celebrities and online personalities now getting involved in exhibition contests, Hearn has lifted the lid on conversations he has had in the past with Rooney regarding potentially stepping inside the ring for the very first time.
Speaking recently via the Stick to Football Podcast, the Matchroom Boxing promoter told how Rooney often sends him messages about boxing and how he fancies his chances in the ring.
”After every big fight with a YouTuber, sometimes (Wayne) Rooney will fire me a message and go listen,” said Hearn, 44.
”Wayne Rooney had a very limited amateur pedigree but could still fight. Wayne Rooney training, imagine the shape he’d get in, against Jake Paul at Old Trafford. A lot of people in that position, to get back into shape with the training, it’s almost like its own reality experience.
”With 12 weeks of training, he would be in unbelievable shape. I get asked the question all the time, if there were two footballers. And I know most footballers watch and follow boxing, and secretly they’d all love to have a go – everyone thinks they can fight.”
Rooney’s first match in charge of Blues since replacing John Eustace is against Middlesbrough – managed by former Old Trafford colleague Michael Carrick – on Saturday. His first home game is against Hull next week.
