Todd Kane, a former defender for Coventry City, has joined Manchester 1962 FC of Gibraltar on a free transfer. The news was announced on the club’s Twitter page.
The 30-year-old’s contract with the Championship team terminated in the summer, making him a free agent. After healing from his injuries, he unexpectedly decided to go abroad rather than stay in the UK.
After leaving Queens Park Rangers in August 2021, Kane signed with Coventry City. In his 41 games for the football team, he assisted on five goals and scored one goal while playing at the CBS Arena.
Nevertheless, the defender only made five appearances for the team during his second half of last season due to a significant injury sustained early on while on loan at League One’s Charlton Athletic.
The full-back made his professional debut with Chelsea and has since played for 11 different teams, including foreign teams FC Groningen and NEC Nijmegen as well as Coventry, Preston, Nottingham Forest, and others.
Manchester 1962 FC, Kane’s new team, is presently fourth in the Gibraltar National League rankings. They play Mons Calpe at home tomorrow and then go to Lincoln Red Imps the following weekend.
After joining the team, Kane said…
It is shocking to see Kane leave English football entirely considering he has played practically his whole career in the English Championship.
He appears to have a different motivation for moving to Gibraltar, though, based on his interview, so it will be interesting to watch how he does.
