Coventry City knew they had a diamond on their hands after Viktor Gyokeres scored 21 goals in the Championship the previous year.
After garnering significant attention from European teams, Sporting purchased the striker for €20 million.
Gyokeres is now enjoying a fantastic start for the Lisbon team. Manager Ruben Amorim, who was cited by O Jogo, discusses how costly the player will likely grow this season.
The striker is already being linked to a new transfer, and the coach makes it plain that it won’t be cheap, just months after leaving Coventry City.
He’s got a catch. As far as I know, there will only be one departure this year with a condition. He must leave if they pay €100 million. He will play for Sporting until then, according to Amorim. Sporting said that Coventry City would receive 15% of any future transfer profit when they announced Gyokeres’ deal. That would only be altered if specific goals were accomplished—they aren’t specified—in which case it would increase to 10%.
This implies that in the event of a fictitious €100 million transfer, the Championship team would receive between €8 and €12 million. Gyokeres has made nine appearances for Sporting thus far, tallying eight goals and two assists. Transfermarkt values him at €32 million.
