Gary Brabin has been named as Micky Mellon’s assistant manager at Oldham Athletic. The club legend Paul Murray, who will combine his responsibilities as Academy manager with a new job as first team coach, joins Latics as part of the new-look coaching staff. The 52-year-old former manager of Cambridge United, Luton Town, and Tranmere also joins Latics.

Tomorrow, Mellon will have both of them in the dugout for his debut game in charge—a derby against Rochdale.

“I’m delighted to have Gary here; he is a vastly experienced coach and someone I really look forward to working with,” Mellon remarked in reference to the appointments.

“I am very aware of who I am and what I need in order to be the greatest version of myself and give the players what they require. “I’d fight beside Gary at any time; he’s a really good addition to the team. “His inclusion in our coaching staff will guarantee that the athletes receive all the assistance they require.

Paul Murray’s decision to assume leadership of the first team group and stay on as Academy supervisor also makes me happy. “I adore the attributes he possesses. “To ensure that the players are supported, you need a team around you, and I appreciate that Paul has been here and is fully aware of the club.” He’s been playing for the club and everything for a very long time. However, it wasn’t the only factor. He is unquestionably a talented football player, and I will be happy to stand with him to encourage the players to strive for success.” Mellon continued, “He’s going to carry on with that and do both, and” in reference to Murray’s Academy job.

“And the club would really like to see him continue with that. I begged for him, and I may have thrown a wrench in things, but I wanted him.

“He’s really experienced at knowing that type of (Academy) job and he’s knows the type of job that he’s going to need to do with me, and he’ll be able to do both.”

Meanwhile, in the 1990s, Brabin performed at Blackpool with Mellon.

Since 2021, he has served as the Sporting Director for The New Saints FC, the winners of the Welsh Premier League, and he will stay on staff there.
