The Sunderland Echo has reported that Zak Johnson, a defender for Sunderland, will stay at Hartlepool United until January.
In September, Sunderland gave the young player the all-clear to leave. He signed a one-month contract before leaving the Championship team.
Since then, Johnson, 19, has made an impression in the National League with Hartlepool. The center back has five league games under his belt with the Pools.
According to the most recent information provided by the Sunderland Echo, he will now spend the New Year by John Askey’s side. When the next transfer window begins, his parent club will evaluate him.
Update on Sunderland loans
Johnson has spent his whole playing career on the books at Sunderland. He progressed through the North East club’s academy system and has recently been a consistent player for them at different young levels. The teenager is signed to a deal at the Stadium of Light through the summer of 2026 and has already made two appearances for the Black Cats in the first team. Due to the wealth of choices available to them in his position, he currently occupies a lower place in Tony Mowbray’s senior team, which is why he was loaned to Hartlepool last month.
Johnson’s brief move to the Pools has given him the opportunity to improve his skills and gain some consistent playing time. The prospect has made 36 appearances for Sunderland’s U21 squad in all competitions to date, but it will be better for him to play in the fifth division than to continue playing youth football. Mowbray’s team will play Leicester City away tomorrow night after losing 2-1 to Stoke City on the road over the weekend.
