Aston Villa news that’s up to date from BirminghamLive, including interest in Sporting winger Geny Catamo before the January transfer window opens.
Geny Catamo, a winger for Sporting CP, is being watched by Aston Villa as he attracts attention from teams in the Premier League. The 22-year-old has appeared in each of Sporting’s first eight Primeira Liga matches this season. With seven wins so far this season, Ruben Amorim’s team is leading the Portuguese premier division. Catamo made his debut in Amorim’s first team and has since contributed three goals across all competitions. After joining Sporting in 2019, the left-footed international from Mozambique played for the ‘B’ team at Amora for three years.
After receiving a promotion to the senior team in 2021, he left for consecutive loans to Maritimo and Vitoria Sport Clube, respectively. According to BirminghamLive, Catamo is being observed by several clubs, such as Villa and Fulham, following his season-long opportunity to make an impression.
Catamo, who may depart the José Alvalade Stadium as early as January, is attracting a lot of interest. His current Sporting deal is expiring in two years.
Recently, the owners of Villa, V Sports, made a move into Portuguese football when they bought a share in Vitoria, the team that Catamo joined on loan for the second half of the 2021–2022 season. V Sports said that it will be cutting its ownership of the Portuguese club to 29% and eliminating its presence on the board of directors, given that both teams have qualified for the Europa Conference League this season. January is when Unai Emery will try to bolster his team. Villa has had a strong start to the season, winning six of their first seven games.
