The graduate of Leeds United’s academy is among the first names on Daniel Farke’s roster.
“This is only the start. I still have a ton of ambitions I want to accomplish. I know athletes say this all the time, but it’s true: I put in a lot of effort every day to improve. It’s a nice start, but let’s say I want more and more.”
That was Crysencio Summerville’s assessment on his first few years at Leeds United following a few Premier League games back in 2022. Since then, the Dutch teenager has undoubtedly improved significantly and is now among Daniel Farke’s first-choice players on the team sheet.
The 21-year-old is one of the Championship’s most dangerous offensive threats with four goals and two assists in nine games. Over the last two years, Summerville has made significant progress toward realizing his potential, but his place at the top of Farke’s starting lineup cannot be overstated.
Rewinding a year earlier, Summerville came off the bench to help the Whites defeat Liverpool on the road with three crucial points, but regular starting minutes were hard to come by due to the team’s collective troubles.
Despite this, the Dutch youth international played in 28 Premier League games, contributing two assists and four goals, which he has already matched this season. The Championship is obviously not as good as the Premier League, but Summerville truly shines in the way that he delivers his magical moments.
The brace against Norwich City, the victory against QPR, the assist for Dan James to open the score against Bristol City, the assist for Liam Cooper and the subsequent 95th-minute equalizer at Cardiff City. All noteworthy events in and of themselves, but Summerville has given Leeds United 10 points with his own efforts.
Farke is aware of his value to the team and is not blind to his rising influence on it.
“Crysencio is an incredible player; watching him is almost enjoyable,” he remarked after the team defeated the Canaries 3-2. “It’s heartwarming to see a guy touching the ball like he does, which is why we all enter the stadium.”
“However, there is one thing we consistently discuss and talk about with him: we want him to become more effective, and for that to happen, we need objectives, help, and results. This is also the last phase in determining his career’s next move, or end product.
“If he continues to play this well and scores two goals, I believe that he will finish the season with a lot of goals and assists. He must persevere through the lengthy season, but he is undoubtedly headed in the right direction. He truly deserves all of the recognition for his excellent performance today.
Summerville was the subject of interest last summer, and his strong play this year will only increase it in January and during the summer transfer window. Any promotion attempt this season will depend heavily on keeping him at Elland Road.
