In the lead-up to Thursday’s match against Sparta Prague, Brian Priske has heaped praise on new Rangers manager Philippe Clement (October 26).

The manager of the Czech team expressed his admiration for the Belgian during a press conference on Wednesday, October 25, via BBC Sport, prior to the Europa League match. He called the player a “good coach” and a “amazing person.” After playing with the 49-year-old for Club Brugge 15 years ago, the Danish manager said he stayed in touch with him and wished him luck in Glasgow, but asked that they not play each other in the upcoming few weeks.

“I left Bruges fifteen years ago,” Priske remarked. However, we have maintained occasional contact over the years. During the year I was with Antwerp, we spoke frequently—not just before the games, but also after.

“I think highly of Philippe as a person and as a coach; he is a gentleman in many ways, an incredible individual, and an excellent coach. He accomplished incredible things at Bruges and Genk, and I hope Glasgow will bring him even more success—just not in the next few weeks.

Back it up

Since Clement was named the new Rangers manager a few weeks ago, an awful lot of positive things have been said about him. Priske is obviously familiar with him from their time together at Club Brugge, and he will be aware of the Belgian’s character. But now that he wants to position the Gers to regularly contend for trophies, it’s time for him to back up all that praise.

He defeated Hibernian 4-0 on Saturday, October 21, and the match against Sparta will be his first significant test as the Light Blues manager.

After the team had previously struggled to produce strong performances in the big games under Michael Beale, it will give an indication of where the squad is at.
