Ange Postecoglou may decide to switch things up in terms of his Tottenham team for next Monday’s Premier League home clash against Chelsea, with a big change to a key area of the side.
Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham team will have to wait for their next match after playing two Premier League games in the span of five days the previous week. Spurs, who were eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the end of August, have plenty of time to get ready for Chelsea’s visit the following Monday.
The match will not only mark Mauricio Pochettino’s first visit to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since his firing as head coach four years ago, but it will also provide the Lilywhites with a chance to stay atop the Premier League standings. Their most recent match saw them triumph after a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Crystal Palace. Summer addition Brennan Johnson made an immediate impression from the bench and was crucial to the team’s success at Selhurst Park.
After taking Richarlison’s place in the 66th minute, Son Heung-min’s simple finish two minutes later allowed him to double the lead. First, Johnson headed Pape Matar Sarr’s long ball into James Maddison’s path. The England international then gave the ball back to Johnson, who squared to Son to score.
The winger’s contribution was clearly valued by the Tottenham captain, who was seen pointing at him as soon as the player scored, before the two linked arms and ran towards the celebrating away end. The hamstring injury the Wales international suffered on his full debut at Arsenal has limited his playing time thus far, but the former Nottingham Forest player gave everyone in south London a taste of what he can do.
Following the match, Postecoglou praised Johnson and the other substitutes for their contributions coming off the bench in the victory at Selhurst Park in an interview with football.london.
Yes, Brennan was excellent. He’s obviously had a few setbacks, so we haven’t really seen him in any consistent game or practise time, but over the past two weeks, he has put in a lot of effort in his training,” he said.
“I assumed that every substitute who entered… Pierre, in my opinion, helped us take control of the midfield, and I thought Emerson played a fantastic left-back position. The guys coming on and helping us see out games is exactly the kind of thing that is helping us right now.”
Johnson’s next goal will be to push his way into Postecoglou’s thoughts regarding his starting lineup for the Chelsea game, especially after he had such a significant role in the victory over the Eagles. Richarlison or Dejan Kulusevski may have to consider missing out on the team if they have a strong training week. The Australian has already given him something to think about in his playing time during the victory at Palace.
Thanks to Postecoglou’s football philosophy, Tottenham has truly made people take notice this season, but there is still a lot more to come from them. Despite scoring 22 goals in ten league games, they haven’t quite found their groove in the last third of the pitch. The head coach said in his press conference prior to the Crystal Palace match that the “biggest growth” for them will come in the attacking department.
“It all. When asked what Tottenham still needed to work on, he responded, “We still have to grow in every area.” There are already certain domains in which we excel, especially in the field of defence. We’ve really been great there, in my opinion.
“I declared that’s what won us the game on Monday night after the game. to put in a lot of effort, push the opposition, maintain discipline, and be steadfast in your commitment to making mistakes in the opposition. For me, that’s been really wonderful and satisfying.
“I still believe that our main development will occur on the offensive side of the game. It’s not surprising, in my opinion, that many of our movements—especially in the front third—remain far from being fluid and natural as we would like. However, the fact that we have excellent quality up there is what is helping us achieve our goals. However, I continue to believe that our attacking side of the game will see the most improvement.”
Blessed with speed, skill, and amazing movement, Johnson seems to be the ideal addition to Postecoglou’s front three. He also has an eye for a goal and an assist. He has the potential to significantly improve Tottenham’s attack once he reaches the pinnacle of his game.
Giving him the necessary playing time will be crucial to that because he has only played in four Tottenham matches to date, logging just 108 minutes due to injury. The player’s best opportunity to truly launch his Spurs career is on Monday when Chelsea visits N17, which is located across the capital.
Following his heroics against Crystal Palace last time out, Johnson has had a great week on the training pitch. Postecoglou might unleash him in the London derby. It might mark the beginning of the head coach’s front three really finding their groove and Spurs moving up a level or two in the process.
