The winger came off the bench against Hibs to make his first Hoops appearance in eighteen months.

Greg Taylor is adamant that Celtic scapegoat Mikey Johnston can prove he has a future at Parkhead and silence his critics.

Many punters have written off the winger after a challenging few years due to form and injury. Although Johnston, 24, is no longer considered a young player, many feel that he will never be good enough to play with his childhood heroes because he has only made 31 starts since his debut in May 2017.

Johnston’s career has undoubtedly been cruelly derailed by an unending string of unlucky injuries. The deft attacker, though, has proven himself on the international scene after making six appearances and scoring twice for the Republic of Ireland.

Every day in training, Taylor observes what Johnston, who was on loan with Portuguese team Vitoria Guimares for the previous season, is capable of. However, after making his first appearance for Celtic in eighteen months with a late cameo against Hibs, the left-back has challenged his friend to take advantage of his big opportunity when it presents itself.

“He’s got bags of ability, Mikey,” Taylor remarked. He is among the best when it comes to one-on-one training. You’ve seen his Ireland performances. They’ve also been incredibly powerful, so Mikey is talented. All that matters is delivering work at a steady pace.

“He will have the chance to play in games if he performs that in training. A very good player is present. Despite having a difficult time with injuries, I believe he had a reasonably steady run in Portugal the previous year.

Although he undoubtedly missed a significant portion of preseason, he has been relatively healthy throughout this season. He’s becoming more consistently fit. Mikey should put in the necessary training time and wait for his chance. And accept it when it’s offered.”
