Despite scoring in his team’s 5-0 victory over Dundee, Rangers forward Danilo has been criticised by BBC Sport pundit Neil McCann for being “too clever” with his finishing.
On Wednesday, November 1, the Gers defeated Celtic with ease at Dens Park, closing the gap to five points over the leaders of the Scottish Premiership.
Danilo scored his team’s second goal, but McCann thinks he could have scored much more if he had adopted a more straightforward one-on-one strategy.
“I believe he has demonstrated the ability to move with grace, maintain a good pace, and have an awareness of his surroundings that indicates success,” McCann told BBC Sportscene on November 1 at 1 hour, 10 minutes and 16 seconds.
He could have easily scored five or six goals tonight; his finishing is what he needs to work on. It’s that motion, that contact. He attempts to be too cute after falling short, playing it, and making his way [into the box]. All he has to do is slide it low enough to land in the net’s back.
McCann said of yet another missed Danilo opportunity, “Sometimes you try to be too clever.” Another one where all he needs to do is steer it down low, but he tries to aim for the top corner and misses completely.
However, Dundee was really troubled by his movement tonight. He is demonstrating that, once he gains confidence and goals, and grasps the league, he appears to be a real good find for Rangers.
Assuring
Danilo can be satisfied with his performance at Dens Park as well as that of his team, having secured a well-earned victory that maintains the momentum under Philippe Clement.
Although the Brazilian can appear unpolished at times, his movement and final third link-up play are definitely getting better every week. Although a period of time spent on the sidelines due to a facial injury has hindered his adjustment, he has four goals and an assist in nine games since moving from Feyenoord. Supporters should be thrilled with Danilo’s performances against Hearts and Dundee in particular because, although occasionally he finished rashly, he was consistently in promising positions. The Gers will have a player on their hands who can consistently score in double figures during the league season once he works on maintaining his composure.
