ANDONI Iraola has congratulated Cherries’ women team for setting a new attendance record for their game against Portishead this weekend, with the Basque boss saying the club should be “proud”.

Men’s team boss Iraola also commended Steve Cuss’s charges for their flying start to the season, Cherries sitting atop the National League South West division with eight wins from their first eight games.

This weekend, Cuss’ side welcome struggling Portishead to Vitality Stadium in what will only be the third time Cherries’ women have graced the hallowed turf of Dean Court.

The previous record of 3,067 for Cherries’ last game at the Vitality, against Maidenhead in April, looks set to be smashed.

It has been announced that the club have issued over 6,000 tickets for the fixture, with fans able to walk up and purchase tickets at the ground up until kick-off.

Asked about the women’s game, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “I think it’s very good, for the club to keep growing.

“Also we have now the second team in the category two.

So it’s very good. The women, also the results are doing really, really well.

“I think to have this kind of attendance, it shows that the sport is growing a lot.

“And I think it’s really, really nice for them. And we have to congratulate them and be proud also as a club.”
