According to The Sun, Birmingham City are interested in signing Wrexham AFC midfielder Elliot Lee.
Lee joined the Red Dragons on a free transfer from Luton Town in the summer of 2022. The 28-year-old was instrumental in the club’s ascension through the National League, scoring 12 goals in 45 league games. Lee, who can play in midfield as well as further forward, has maintained his excellent form this season, scoring 10 goals and providing two assists in 16 League Two games.
His form for Wrexham has not gone unnoticed, with this report claiming that Birmingham manager Wayne Rooney is interested in signing the 28-year-old in January.
Would Elliot Lee be a good signing for Birmingham City?
We asked some Football League World writers for their thoughts on Birmingham’s interest in Lee and whether Wrexham would sell the midfielder.
Here’s what they had to say…
Worthington, Brett
Lee has struggled to stand out in his career, but that has all changed since joining Wrexham.
The 28-year-old has gone from being a forgotten man to being a vital member of this Wrexham side.
Many people believe Paul Mullin is crucial to the team, and he is, but Lee has assisted the club in taking their game to the next level.
Lee is a Championship player who plays in League Two, so it’s not surprising that a team from that division is interested in him. The Wrexham player is similar to Rooney in that he plays off the striker, who can run in behind but can also drop deep and get on the ball.
It’s easy to see why Birmingham are interested in him, and you can see Rooney wanting that type of player as he looks to strengthen and improve his squad. Wrexham, on the other hand, is likely to dig in their heels and refuse to sell one of their best players.
As we all know, Wrexham are well-funded, which means they are under no pressure to sell for a League Two club. So, it will almost certainly take an unrefusable offer for the club to even consider selling Lee, and as a result, it is possible that Birmingham will move on, as the price may be too high even for them.

It’s no surprise that EFL clubs are taking note of Elliot Lee’s form at Wrexham.
The 28-year-old is having the best season of his career for Phil Parkinson’s side and has re-established himself as a goal threat, scoring 24 goals since the start of last season, after displaying that side of himself with Luton Town a few years ago.
Birmingham City could use more goals across the board, with Jay Stansfield shouldering a lot of the load this season, and signing Lee could provide that – though the step up to Championship level will be difficult.
He is about to enter the final 18 months of his contract, and the move to the second tier will appeal to him. However, given their financial clout, luring him away from Wrexham midway through their promotion push will be difficult. As a result, you have to wonder if the Blues would be better off pursuing other targets.
