Alan Hutton, a former Aston Villa full-back, has joined us as an exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll share his thoughts on the hot topics at Villa Park…

Alan Hutton does not want Aston Villa to wait until the end of the season to renew manager Unai Emery’s contract.

The 52-year-old has done a fantastic job in his first year at Villa Park, but his excellent work has seen him linked with other big Premier League jobs, with the Spaniard’s name cropping up in discussions about Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United [talkSPORT].

Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell revealed to Villa News on 5 November that there have been whispers about Aston Villa offering Emery a new contract once the season is over.

Bardell stated that he is “surprised” that nothing has been done to secure Emery’s future at Villa Park sooner.

Hutton also believes that his former club should not waste time. He does, however, admit that it could be the ex-Arsenal manager’s decision to postpone any talks until next summer.

“I’d rather they just went ahead and got it done,” Hutton said to Villa News.

“Since joining the club, he’s been a revelation. He got them into Europe after everything that had happened before, the recruitment has been fantastic, and they appear to be in a good place behind the scenes. I’d like to see [a new contract] completed as soon as possible while things are going well.

Whether this comes down to the manager saying he wants to focus on what he’s doing right now and doesn’t have the extra time to discuss contracts. I know a lot of people – players, managers – who want the season to be over so they can talk about it.

“It could possibly be that but for me personally, I’d like to see him sign now.”
