Dr Daniel Plumley, a football finance expert, has joined us as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week, he’ll share his thoughts on the hot topics at The Hawthorns…

Dan Plumley has insisted that non-parachute payment clubs such as West Brom will benefit the most from a new EFL and Premier League agreement.

According to Sky News, Richard Masters wants to put a proposed new deal worth £915 million to clubs to a vote this month, despite the fact that no agreements have been reached.

The finance expert admitted that if the Baggies do not gain promotion to the Premier League, they could benefit financially, with up to £8 million potentially on the line.

“They’ve had a good start to the season, but they’re still up against clubs with parachute payments, and we know they’re twice as likely to get promoted,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“You have to consider Leicester, Leeds, and Southampton in that mix, who are all in that top four, with West Brom knocking on the door.”

That is still the nature of the Championship; if West Brom did not get promoted, they would benefit more from this type of deal because the uplift for non-parachute payment clubs is significant and can last for several years.

That could be an extra £6-8 million under the terms of the deal, which must be agreed upon by the clubs, the EFL, and the Premier League, but you can see the benefit further down the line for non-parachute payment clubs, for example.”
