Sunderland captain Corry Evans has revealed that he is nearing a return from an anterior cruciate ligament injury that has kept him out for nearly a year.
The 33-year-old sustained the serious injury in January during a 2-0 win over rivals Middlesbrough. The Black Cats responded to the news by extending the Northern Ireland international’s contract by one year, which was set to expire at the end of the current season.
Evans joined the Wearside club in 2021 and was instrumental in their League One promotion-winning season. He was also a constant in their promotion to the Championship last season before being ruled out for up to a year with an injury. Tony Mowbray’s side, on the other hand, continued to impress in his absence, reaching the play-offs before losing in the semi-finals to Luton Town in two legs.
Sunderland’s season has continued in a similar vein, with yesterday’s win over Birmingham City propelling them back into the play-off spots. Despite the fact that the league is arguably more difficult than it has ever been, they are expected to maintain their promotion push.
Evans’ return would provide additional depth to the manager’s squad as the season winds down, and the former Manchester United youngster has confirmed that he is nearing a return to fitness and expects to resume training in the coming weeks. In an interview with the Sunderland Echo, he stated:
“The injury is healing nicely. I’m on the right track. It’s been a difficult 9-12 month injury; that’s the time frame I was given. I think I’m about nine-ish months in now, so hopefully back training in about five or six weeks.
Watching from the stands has been difficult for the former Blackburn Rovers player, though he has enjoyed what he has seen. I believe we have a very good squad.” We built on it from the previous season. The players from last season have gained another year of Championship experience, and I believe they have started really well and positively this year. It has been hard, personally, to watch on the sidelines but it has been enjoyable at the same time as well because of the football we have been playing.
Sunderland will resume their Championship campaign on November 25th, following the international break, with a trip to Plymouth Argyle.
Author’s Opinion
Sunderland have performed admirably in Corry Evans’ absence, with Dan Neil and Jobe Bellingham filling in admirably. However, having his experience for the second half of the season will be a huge help, even if he will have to be eased back in gradually.
Mowbray is still looking for more signings in the New Year in order to return the club to the Premier League, but Evans could be just like a new arrival if he can regain full fitness.
