In football, there’s an unwritten rule that says you should try selling Blackpool that loan player instead of falling in love with him.

Although the Tangerines have a good mix of youth and experience, a player on loan from another club is their best player this year. At the close of the summer transfer window, Jordan Rhodes arrived at Bloomfield Road from Championship underdogs Huddersfield Town, where he will remain until the end of the 2023–24 season. Former West Brom manager Darren Moore took over as manager of the Terriers from Neil Warnock, and it is unclear if Rhodes will be permitted to join on a permanent basis.

When asked about his thoughts on going back to Yorkshire, the 33-year-old, who has nine goals in 13 League One games this season, responded cryptically. Although Blackpool have a number of good forward options, a loan recall would be disastrous for them. If they want to be in the running for the play-offs at the end of the season, they need Rhodes for the whole campaign.

The club also has Jensen Weir and Karamoko Dembele on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion and Brest, respectively, so Rhodes is not the only player on loan. Dembele is gradually winning over fans, while Weir still needs to find the form he had while at Morecambe. Neither player has had the same impact as Rhodes.

Is it possible for any of their loan agreements to become permanent? If the Tangerines believed that all three would benefit from long-term arrangements, here’s what they might be expected to pay. While Dembele’s contract expires in 2026, Rhodes’ contract is valid through the summer of 2024, and Weird’s Seagulls contract is good for at least one more season. We examine what it would cost Blackpool and their League One rivals to convert their current loan agreements into permanent signings using TransferMarkt.
