Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds could not help but make reference to his Red Dragons business partner Rob McElhenney during a typically tongue-in-cheek commercial for his American gin brand.
Wrexham fans have become accustomed to seeing Ryan Reynolds alongside Rob McElhenney, but his usual sidekick was replaced as the actor filmed an advert for one of the club’s sponsors.
The Hollywood pair’s ownership of the North Wales outfit has helped to bring the Red Dragons to a newfound global audience over the past three years. However, ‘Deadpool’ superstar Reynolds had to enlist the help of ‘other Rob’ to film a recent advert for Aviation American Gin.
Despite the company being listed as one of Wrexham’s commercial partners, club co-owner McElhenney could not take part on purported legal grounds. This time around, therefore, the Canadian funnyman turned to Matchbox Twenty rockstar Rob Thomas to help promote his gin brand instead.
The musician, known for his 1999 smash hit ‘Smooth’, would lend his singing talents to the filming of the advert, while making sure to bring a Welsh twist to proceedings. In a humorous exchange, Reynolds would explain: “Wrexham fans have grown used to seeing me and ‘other’ Rob together – but he’s not legally allowed to be in Aviation Gin commercials.”
From there, the ‘Lonely No More’ hitmaker would do what he does best after asking the Wrexham co-chairman: “You want me to sing songs about Aviation Gin?” to which Reynolds would reply in his usual dry style, saying: “Yes – and in Welsh.”
Thomas seemingly was enthused by the prospect, as he raised his cocktail to demonstrate his eagerness to deliver on the ‘Green Lantern’ leading man’s request. Excited by the chart-topper’s promise to break into song in Welsh, Reynolds would reply: “I already like you better than ‘other’ Rob.”
