As Celtic continue the hunt for a striker who could step in for Kyogo Furuhashi in January, Peter Grant has said that there is one former English Premier League winner that would love to play for the club.
The former Celtic hero was discussing transfer options for Celtic when he was asked if it was too late for the Leicester City striker to play for the club.
Grant said, “No, never too late for him. No not at this time because he’s still fit. At Celtic? Of course. Because he still runs in behind.
“There’s absolutely no doubt that somebody like Jamie Vardy has still got it. Listen, he’s still got the bit between his teeth.
“He plays on the edge. And he’s the sort of guy that would have loved playing for Celtic or Rangers because of the atmosphere.
“So there’s absolutely no doubt.”
There is no doubt that in his heyday, Vardy was a superb striker in the English Premier League. In his career, the 35-year-old has netted an ‘incredible‘ 209 times in 484 appearances.
And not only has won the league with Leicester he has also won the FA Cup and Charity Shield and was the top goalscorer in the EPL in 2020 with 23 goals.
This season, however, Vardy has only scored five times in 17 appearances in the English Championship so it does look like age has caught up with him.
And will we mention the fact that he is on £80k per week? [Salary Sport] Probably best not to.
Vardy could probably still score goals in the Scottish Premiership but with the intensity and speed that Celtic play, he would either struggle to keep up or get injured trying to.
I think this is one we should place on the ‘Not Going To Happen’ list and move on to more affordable and younger targets.
In other news, Celtic now set to offer 25-year-old player a big new contract to stay at Parkhead.
