Given the Rangers’ recent surge in performance, it’s possible that under Michael Beale’s meticulous management, this piece didn’t have much of a chance.
The only person on the team who did not struggle for any sort of form was keeper Jack Butland. A declining set of market values and fewer possible suitors accompany bad form. However, since Philippe Clement took over, the entire Ibrox landscape has changed in a matter of games, and players are showcasing their true abilities.
Rangers will therefore be aware that they will have a number of marketable players on their roster. Although supporters would gladly see their top players depart, it is a fact that higher bids will be made the more Clement can extract the greatest performance from the five players listed below. Football Scotland examines the club’s most lucrative assets, which have the potential to bring in millions of dollars.
Todd Cantwell
Age: 25
Contract expires: 2027
The attacking midfielder may be in and out of Philippe Clement’s team at the moment, but there’s no denying he is one of the most talented players Rangers has at their disposal.
He cost just £1.5million from Norwich City and has experience of playing at the highest level in the English Premier League so he would command a decently sized fee.
Danilo
Age: 24
Contract expires: 2028
Questions were being asked of the Brazilian at the start of the season as he struggled to get properly going in a Rangers jersey following a big money move from Dutch champions Feyenoord.
He scored goals aplenty for them so it was clear he had talent – it was just a case of when he’d show it for Gers. Thankfully for fans, he’s now producing the goods he was brought in to do.
Danilo is probably favourite to finish the Ibrox side’s top scorer – if not James Tavernier – this season and a few seasons of prolific form could have potential suitors taking notice.
Nico Raskin
Age: 22
Contract expires: 2027
The tough tackling Belgian has become a mainstay within Rangers’ midfield since arriving from Standard Liege last season. Raskin can operate efficiently in both directions of play and has the engine needed for the modern day box-to-box midfielder.
Born in 2001, Raskin has a big future ahead of him if he continues to progress in the right trajectory at Ibrox.
Jack Butland
Age: 30
Contract expires: 2027
There’s very little to argue against the Englishman being the signing of the Scottish Premiership season so far – and he’ll likely be up for the annual awards at the end of the campaign such is the importance of his presence for Rangers.
Butland was the one bright spark amid the doom and gloom of Michael Beale’s tenure as Gers boss at the start of the season and he’s arguably got even better under Clement, with four clean sheets in seven secured under his stewardship.
He has Manchester United and England national team pedigree and at 30, is pretty young for a goalkeeper. Wayne Rooney’s Birmingham City have been linked with a swoop but you’d have to think given the form Butland is in, he could easily go back and play in the Premier League.
Ross McCausland
Age: 20
Contract expires: 2024
This young man may have the brightest future out of the options on this list. The past week has been sensational for McCausland’s chances of earning more regular chances under Clement, who is obviously a big admirer.
McCausland has been in the news for contrasting reasons this week but there’s no doubting his fearlessness and mentality, which of course are two big traits needed to succeed at the highest level.
The sky is the limit for this McCausland and if Rangers do tie him down until 2027 as has been reported, the starlet’s market value is going to skyrocket.
