Rangers star Jose Cifuentes is on his way back to Glasgow early from international duty after being told he can leave his Ecuador camp following a suspension.

Cifuentes was a marquee signing for former Ibrox boss Michael Beale in the summer who predicted he would take Rangers to the ‘next level.’

However, the South American playmaker has struggled to adapt so far to Scottish football and has made just four league starts so far and has yet to score.

He was called up for his country this week for Ecuador’s World Cup qualifiers.

But he was booked in their game against Venezuela which has ruled him out of their next game against Chile this week after previously being cautioned against Argentina.

And manager Felix Sanchez has told Cifuentes he can return to Scotland immediately.

He said: “Both Jose Cifuentes and Piero Hincapie are now suspended for the next game against Chile.

“Therefore, both are free to return to their respective clubs.”

Cifuentes, who cost Rangers £1.2 million from Los Angeles FC, has won 18 caps for Ecuador, who currently sit in the sixth and final spot that would secure automatic qualification for the next World Cup, which is expanded to 48 teams.
