Danny Ings could exit West Ham United in January and the Hammers could be set to pay £40 million-plus to sign his replacement in January, according to the Sunday Mirror.
The newspaper reported in its print edition (19 November, page 75) that the striker might be allowed to leave the London Stadium in January, should David Moyes be able to find a “suitable replacement” having lost Gianluca Scamacca in the summer.
West Ham look likely to revive their interest in Dominic Solanke having failed in an approach to sign him in July, with sources suggesting that Bournemouth locked back a deal worth up to £40 million during the summer transfer window.
The Cherries don’t want to sell the forward, who has more than three years left on his current deal on the South Coast, but Moyes’ side look set to revive their interest in the 26-year-old.
It has been clear for some time that Ings doesn’t have a future at the London Stadium. The striker doesn’t fit Moyes’ style of play whatsoever and often looks lost on the rare occasions that he has been entrusted to lead the Hammers’ frontline.
The Scotsman clearly prefers either Michail Antonio or Jarrod Bowen as his number nine in the biggest occasions and even now the Europa League. It would be best to allow the former Southampton man to leave in January and bring in a replacement.
Solanke has shown in the early stages of this season and the entirety of last that he is more than capable of being a number nine in the top flight. This season he has six goals in 12 matches and last year he registered 13 goal involvements in the Premier League.
But for £40 million or more, the Hammers will want a striker that is going to finally hit 20 goals a season for them and the only time the 26-year-old has ever got near that figure has been when he’s playing in the Championship.
If they are going to spend that much on a new striker, it feels as though West Ham could pick up somebody a bit more exciting and prolific than Solanke this January.
