Richard Keys speaks out on Everton escape at Leicester City’s expense and what he has to say on Everton’s points deduction in the Premier League.

Richard Keys says Everton should be “thankful” they were not hit with a points deduction before the end of last season.

The Toffees have been given a 10-point penalty for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, plunging them into the relegation zone and two points adrift of safety. But if the penalty had been imposed before the end of last season, Everton would have already been relegated and Leicester City would have survived in the top flight.

Leicester were relegated in 18th place last season after finishing just two points behind Everton in the final relegation spot. It has been confirmed the Foxes have applied for financial compensation over the situation, and Keys has had his say on the matter.

“They’ve (Everton) been on a slow-motion journey to last week’s announcement of a 10-point deduction because of financial irregularities for some time now,” he wrote in his blog. “They should be thankful that the trip ended last week and not before the end of last season – as some at the PL wanted – because they’d be playing Championship football now if it had done.”

“There’s an appeal to be lodged of course. And it’s possible the 10 point deduction will be reduced. Possible – but I’m not convinced that it will be,” he added.

“Look. Ten points sounds harsh. But is it? Some pundits have been screaming that it’s ‘disproportionate’. But is it? No. It’s now the benchmark. There’s never been a case like this one so there’s nothing to judge it against.”
