Paul Robinson, who acknowledged that he thought some of West Brom’s decisions this season were “strange,” showered Carlos Corberan with praise for his work.
Even though they have a nearly empty roster following a quiet summer transfer window, Albion is currently tied for seventh place in the Championship table with Sunderland, who are in the final spot of the top six.
Although Corberan deserves a lot of the credit for his outstanding play at The Hawthorns, former left-back Robinson acknowledged that he thought it strange that Albion let players go this summer, including Taylor Gardner-Hickman and other squad members.
He stated, “I think at this moment in time he’s done a great job, especially with the limited funds he’s had to work with,” as reported by the Express & Star on November 21.
“I thought it odd that he had to let go of players, like Taylor Gardner-Hickman, who are excellent footballers and should be kept on the squad, because the team is now down to the bare bones.
However, seventh in the league is still a tough ranking in a very tough league this year, with some of the toughest teams in memory being the ones that went down and others that rose. Carlos is doing a great job, in my opinion.
“West Brom is in a great position this year, but you might be worried about that depth to help them get to where they need to be a little bit more.” However, I would really like to see it. Baggies always belong in the top division due to their past performance there.
Excellent posture
A season of disappointment following an unimpressive transfer window had most West Brom supporters resigning themselves to, it’s almost forgotten how bad things were around The Hawthorns before a ball was even kicked this season.
Corberan’s squad was severely limited after yet another year of underfunding, and Albion’s roster had lost any semblance of depth due to the departure of players like Gardner-Hickman, Karlan Grant, and Dara O’Shea.
But Corberan has managed to win games thus far this season despite having multiple players out due to injury, and much like Robinson has done here, he deserves a great deal of credit for this recent winning streak.
It is never easy to escape the Championship, but this season is particularly difficult with many financially strong teams. It will be difficult for Albion to make it back to the Premier League, but if they keep playing the way they have this year, West Brom can definitely challenge for the play-off spots.
