Aston Villa’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on the road has now broken the club record for wins in a calendar year.
To the jubilant delight of the supporters, Aston Villa has triumphed away from home for the first time since defeating Chelsea in September.
The first half went slowly for the Villans, but after halftime, Unai Emery made some changes that turned the tide of the match in their favour.
On a half volley, Giovani Lo Celso scored a wonder goal to give the home team the lead. Just before halftime, Pau Torres tied the score for Villa, which gave Emery’s team a strong start to the second half.
Halfway through the half, Ollie Watkins scored his sixth goal in seven games, which turned out to be the game-winning goal. Throughout the game, there were numerous offside goals, which prevented the score from being higher than it could have been.
That being said, with more than a month left in the year, Aston Villa has surpassed a record for the most games won in a calendar year.
Which record did Aston Villa smash?
It’s safe to say that the club has improved greatly under Emery’s leadership. Although moving the team from 17th to 7th place is a remarkable accomplishment, the Villans aren’t going to slow down.
Villa has passed Tottenham to occupy the top four spots as of this writing, two points behind the lead.
The Villans have broken a long-standing club Premier League record with this victory. “Villa have now set a new club record by winning their 22nd Premier match this calendar year,” John Townley tweeted. Amazing!
With this statistic, the Emery revolution is easily observed. To have 22 victories under the Spaniard in 2023 is remarkable, to put it mildly.
Undoubtedly, there have been setbacks, as evidenced by the heartbreaking defeats to Leicester City, Arsenal, and Newcastle United. None more so than the Jorginho moment against the Gunners in the final minute, which at the time struck a deep chord. It is quite amazing that the Villans have only lost eight games, especially considering that an entire year has almost passed.
This season, the Villa supporters have been fortunate to have 22 victories and just five draws. In 2023, winning has turned into a mindset and a necessity.
You only need to look at these numbers and the way the Villans play to see why fans adore Emery.
