Rising Argentine starlet Agustín Ruberto could be Brighton and Hove Albion’s next South American target.
Marca claims Brighton “has already asked about him” as he continues to perform well for Argentina’s U17 team at the World Cup.
The player and his teammate Claudio Echeverri, who is being compared to Lionel Messi, are featured in the newspaper today.
Ruberto is “having a great World Cup” of his own, sitting as the joint top goal scorer in the competition with five goals, despite the mere twelve days separating the two.
Since he and Echeverri have scored 60% of Argentina’s goals thus far, Brighton and other teams are keeping an eye on him. Marca claims that they have already enquired about the player and a possible River Plate transfer.
Whether they would be willing to sell the young player is another story, as his World Cup performances undoubtedly led them to believe that the 17-year-old’s first team debut shouldn’t be too far off.
Nonetheless, Brighton does have a solid track record of acquiring players from South America and succeeding with them.
Regarding Argentina in particular, there is the example of Alexis MacAllister, who was imported from his home country and went on to become a Premier League star. This summer, after leading Argentina to victory at the World Cup, he moved to Liverpool.
They obviously know what they’re doing because of that and the abundance of other talent they’ve acquired from the continent recently. Ruberto appears to be the next man they have their sights set on.
