Paul Mullin, star of Wrexham, has opened up about filming with Ryan Reynolds, getting screamed at by the Hollywood star, and who messed up the most.
Consequently, what happened?
The successful frontman was transferred to SToK Racecourse in the summer of 2021. By then, the documentary “Welcome to Wrexham” had already started filming, and Mullin was one of the people who had to get used to having a camera in their face. That didn’t bother the Merseyside native, who gladly jumped into a leading role during the filming of commercials to support the show.
THOUGHS OF MULLIN
In his autobiography “My Wrexham Story,” Mullin wrote of the incident as follows: “Ryan wanted to do an advert for the show and use a couple of the lads.” The plan was for him to storm into a fully stocked changing room and launch into a monologue about how chilly it was outside and how we should quit this league that plays in the winter, thereby demonstrating his own (pretended) ignorance—after all, every league plays in the winter. I get to play the idiot in this little drama by muttering, Then he launches himself at me, nose to nose.
“Mullin!” I’ll stick a red card up your ass so far that people mistake it for your tongue! It was insane to watch him perform in front of us and to witness firsthand how skilled he is at his craft. My issue was that, in contrast to him, all I could see was myself looking foolish. It may sound crazy, but I do worry about coming across as a showy person.
THE LARGER IMAGE
Mullin continued, “People often ask how many times I laughed when Ryan shoved his face into mine,” in response to a question about who made the most mistakes during filming. Reynolds and co-chairman Rob McElhenney were able to get the shot they were after. Unconsciously, I think that wanting to avoid making a mistake prevented me from crying: we did a lot of takes, but it was really just a few times. We could have spent the entire day there if not. I couldn’t help but tell Ryan, “Mate, you f*cked up more than me!” afterward. To be fair, though, I could only recall one word while he had to recall several dozen. What Ryan and his group did following with those fragments of
Even so, it felt almost surreal to be sitting in the changing room with Ryan Reynolds yelling in my face by the time that episode aired. Being in the presence of one of the most well-known Hollywood actors of the modern era was, in fact, commonplace by that point. I didn’t realise that being bawled out by Ryan Reynolds was actually a pretty strange thing to have happen in your life until everyone started messaging me.
UP NEXT FOR WREXHAM & MULLIN?
Mullin has developed a strong relationship with Reynolds and McElhenney, and he has become a huge fan favourite thanks to his goal-scoring prowess, having amassed 88 goals for Wrexham in 111 appearances. The 29-year-old is currently working to propel the Red Dragons into League One as they aim to win consecutive promotions as a team.
