A green and white jersey signed by the Celtic squad and has Francis written on the back was handed over to the Pope during a private meeting at the Vatican
A Celtic jersey has been presented to Pope Francis by Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers as the squad met the leader of the Catholic Church during their trip to Rome.
The Glasgow side were defeated 2-0 by Lazio on Tuesday night but made the trip to the Vatican the following morning for a private meeting with the Pope. His Holiness spoke to the side and wished them well on their journey home while also speaking about the ‘valued legacy’ of the club because of how they were founded to help people in need.
The Celtic squad, as well as Rodgers and senior figures such as Peter Lawwell, Dermot Desmond and Michael Nicholson, were all in attendance for the meeting. A green and white jersey with Francis on the back and signed by the squad was handed over by the Hoops boss.
Speaking about the meeting earlier in the week, Rodgers said: “That will be absolutely amazing. We would be blessed to do that, it would be a real privilege. Hopefully we can take a really nice result to the Vatican.”
