Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran has poked fun at Legia Warsaw as he took to social media after Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over the Polish club on Thursday night.

The striker led the line given Ollie Watkins’ absence from the squad through injury. Villa took the lead inside four minutes as Moussa Diaby picked up Youri Tielemans pass down the right before reached the penalty box, cut inside on his left foot and bent the ball into the far corner.

Ernest Muci levelled the game 15 minutes later as he took full advantage of Boubacar Kamara’s mistake. The Villa midfielder played the ball straight to Muci on the edge of the box, before the Legia winger beat Robin Olsen by finding the top corner.

On the hour mark, Alex Moreno restored Villa’s advantage by turning in Douglas Luiz’s free-kick. A victory by two clear goals would have seen Villa qualify for the Europa Conference League round of 16, and Leon Bailey came within inches of bagging Villa’s third, but his lob over Kacper Tobiasz came back off the bar.

Villa lead the group heading into the final game of the group stage against Zrinjski Mostar. A point in Bosnia and Herzegovina would see Villa through to the last 16.

Emery’s side were defeated 3-2 by Legia on the opening game of the group stage and struggled to play their best football in what was a cauldron of noise. The home fans unveiled a banner which read: “Welcome to the Jungle.” After Villa’s win over Legia on Thursday, Duran posted on social media.

Duran posted on Twitter: “They took them out of the jungle and now they are ants. 90 more minutes on the legs and the team is still up for more lions.”
