Journalist Dean Jones has disclosed Rangers’ ambitions for the January transfer window; this week, the club also confirmed a change to its hiring process.
Rangers struggle with summer acquisitions
Though it’s fair to argue that acquisitions like Danilo, Cyriel Dessiers, and Sam Lammers haven’t exactly taken Ibrox by storm since arriving in the summer, the Gers have added some outstanding players in recent years. As the season progresses, adjustments will be necessary to maintain the pressure on rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings.
A lot of recent transfer rumours have surfaced about possible forthcoming transactions at the team. Earlier this week, Rangers were connected to a move for former West Brom defender Ahmed Hegazi. The thirty-two-year-old may be planning a free transfer in January in order to leave Saudi Pro League team Al-Ittihad.
Jones discloses transfer plans for January.
Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones asserts that Rangers would only bring in a small number of players in January with the goal of making an immediate impact and delaying a more significant revamp until the summer.
“Getting this perfect will always take some time. I believe that January will focus on implementing a few adjustments. Nothing overly dramatic or outstanding will occur. They wish to implement some modifications that will affect this season.
“I would anticipate a larger revamp once summertime arrives. That, in my opinion, is the time to fully commit to the idea and make every effort to see it through to completion. However, January is a difficult month, and it’s probably not a good idea to enter the market headfirst.”
This update follows Rangers’ announcement that Nils Koppen will take over as the team’s new Director of Football Recruitment. The transfer department has also adopted a new strategy.
These are both extremely encouraging developments for the Gers’ future business, since Koppen’s arrival gives Philippe Clement a new partner to collaborate with when it comes to player acquisition.
Hegazi, for instance, may be a wise addition, bringing a wealth of experience to the back line before the season’s business concludes, but moves up the pitch are also necessary to provide greater offensive strength in the final third.
It’s possible to argue that Rangers won’t be able to compete all the way this season, but if Clement’s team can make it through the holidays this month and into January still having a chance to challenge Celtic, they’ll have a great opportunity to add new players and develop even more.
After all, according to Rangers’ official website, “leading the recently revamped scouting set-up at the Rangers Training Centre” and “ensuring the club have a thriving player trading model,” Koppen’s arrival may prove to be just as significant as any transfer deal.
