The actress from Canada was one of several well-known people who paid their respects to the country’s all-time top goalscorer as she ended her international career.
Ollie Palmer, Paul Mullin, Rosie Hughes, and Christine Sinclair? If Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has anything to do with it, Wrexham’s renowned abundance of attacking potency might be enhanced with a new addition.
On Tuesday, Sinclair will play her farewell game for Canada when her team plays Australia in Vancouver. The all-time top goal scorer for Canada, Sinclair has contributed significantly to the country’s success abroad, winning three Olympic medals, including gold in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games.
With 190 goals for the national team under her belt, Tuesday is the last game of the 40-year-old’s dazzling, prolific, and record-breaking career.
Maybe it doesn’t, though. Like Sinclair, Reynolds is a native of Vancouver, and he has invited the goal scorer to tell her that there is still hope for her career and that she may have a fantastic second act with Wrexham Women.
“Progressing in your career to Wrexham, it’s significant for the town and the club,” Reynolds grinned in a video that Sinclair screened during Reynolds’ CBC interview. “I think that you are going to be probably the key difference maker going forward up there in North Wales.”
Wrexham Women, who achieved an incredible undefeated season last season and were awarded a historic promotion to the top division, are now ranked second in the Adran Premier, Wales’ top women’s league.
In an effort to position Wrexham as the leading women’s football team in Wales, Reynolds and fellow co-owner Rob McElhenney are taking some significant initial moves, including drawing record audiences and establishing a new semi-professional organisation.
And when Sinclair jokingly said, “For the right amount of money I could go,” she just fueled rumours about an unexpected cameo. Sinclair went on to say that she adored Reynolds’ gin, Aviation American Gin, and the club’s current documentary series, Welcome to Wrexham.
Although Wrexham is known for pushing the boundaries of football and the Racecourse has recently become a popular hangout for Hollywood stars and A-listers, bringing Sinclair to North Wales would be a significant achievement even by Reynold’s standards.
Reynolds responded, “What I really wanted to do is thank you,” paying a more sombre homage to one of the greatest football players in Canadian history. “I wanted to express my gratitude for inspiring myself, my children, and children of all ages in Canada and around the globe.
“You’re amazing and deserving of every round of applause that exists.” I’m soooo loving you.”
Over 40,000 people are expected to attend Sinclair’s farewell match for Canada on Tuesday at BC Place, which will be christened Sinclair Place for the day.
