What Wrexham needs to do to give Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney another chance to enjoy an FA Cup run has been laid out by Phil Parkinson.
Consequently, what happened?
Last season, the Red Dragons advanced to the fourth round after defeating Championship team Coventry City in a thrilling match. Billy Sharp ultimately put an end to their hopes of playing in the Premier League, but the Welsh team is back in round three for 2023–24 and getting ready for a matchup with Shrewsbury Town, a local rival.
PARKINSON’S MENTION OF WREXHAM
Parkinson has explained to ITV Sport what has to happen for Wrexham to have another incredible cup run, after the team defeated Yeovil Town 3-0 in the second round: “Everyone remembers Coventry and Sheffield United from last year, but we had to work hard to get there – Blyth Spartans away, windy, horrible away game and we had to bring them back here and win the replay,” I told the boys prior to the game. In previous games, we had to delve really far. Because Shrewsbury away is a local derby and everyone is thrilled about it, today’s game was one of those excellent draws for us. I’m glad we made it through today because we have to earn the right to get there. We can focus on the league, set the FA Cup aside, and travel to Shrewsbury with a positive attitude.
THE LARGER IMAGE
After Ollie Palmer, Andy Cannon, and Sam Dalby scored goals to defeat National League South leaders Yeovil, Parkinson continued, saying, “I thought it was a professional performance from us.” Since Yeovil has nothing to lose, these games are always tough. They had a lot of possession in the first half, but we were patient and knew our chance would come. In the second half, we were unable to locate the crucial pass that would have ended the game until the very last second. Yeovil deserves credit for that because, as the champions of their division, they clearly have a certain pride and spirit about them. They played with that attitude and gave it their all in the second half. We anticipated difficulty.
FUTURE PLANS FOR WREXHAM?
Prior to hosting Shrewsbury in the first week of January, Wrexham has seven games to complete. Their next match is an EFL Trophy match against Burton Albion. Next, League Two will take central stage. Currently sitting in second place in the fourth-tier table, the Red Dragons are five points behind Stockport but guaranteed a promotion.
