Roberto De Zerbi says Billy Gilmour is becoming a very good player but was partly at fault for Chelsea’s third goal against Brighton.

With their 3-2 loss at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Albion had a disappointing afternoon and has now only won one of their last eight Premier League games. The Seagulls gave up a penalty in the second half after James Milner was found to have fouled Mykhailo Mudryk in the area, on a day when several controversial calls were made.

De Zerbi declined to comment on whether or not it was a penalty, but he did suggest that midfielder Gilmour, who he thought performed well in the game, might have done more to stop the counterattack that resulted in the spotkick.

The head coach from Italy said to BBC Match of the Day: “Gilmour is developing into a really talented player. He could have arranged things more skillfully and responsibly in that scenario, the third goal when we gave up the penalty. Nevertheless, I’m quite happy with his performance.”

De Zerbi said Brighton’s performance versus Chelsea was superior, even if the team had just defeated AEK Athens and Nottingham Forest in all competitions.

Despite losing ground to European teams, the former Shakhtar Donetsk manager is optimistic about the club’s bright future. We had another fantastic game. Better than Nottingham Forest and far superior to AEK Athens. The play was of excellent quality, but football is a team sport, and there are many teams with really talented set pieces. You must adopt a new mentality and increase your attention,” he stated.

Though I’m incredibly excited about the club’s future, we still need to improve, therefore I want to win now and hit the goal. We need to play with more intensity.
